Prop Firm Survival Guide: stop out before you blow the account

Most prop-firm failures are not bad strategy — they are broken discipline. Here is how a drawdown guardian like PropGuard Sentinel keeps you alive past the evaluation.

Why traders fail the evaluation

Most prop-firm failures are not caused by a bad edge. They are caused by broken discipline under pressure — revenge entries after a loss, oversizing to "make it back", and drifting past the daily loss limit before logging off.

The firms know this. That is exactly what their rules are designed to catch. A 5% daily loss limit and a 10% max drawdown are not suggestions; breach them and the account is gone, often on a single bad session.

The two numbers that actually matter

If you only configure two things, configure these:

  • Daily loss limit — the max you can lose in a single day (e.g. 5%). This is your early-warning line.
  • Maximum total drawdown — the deepest your equity may fall from the high-water mark (e.g. 10%). This is the kill line.

Everything else (trailing vs static, when the day rolls over) is detail. The point is to have hard numbers and a system that enforces them when your emotions will not.

How a guardian EA changes the game

A drawdown guardian like PropGuard Sentinel sits on any chart and watches your whole-account equity in real time. It does three jobs a human is bad at doing at 2am:

  1. Tracks daily and total drawdown against the exact percentages you set (FTMO-style defaults included).
  2. Warns in tiers — notice at 50%, warning at 75%, danger at 90% — via popup, mobile push and email.
  3. Intervenes — at the danger threshold it force-closes everything and soft-locks the account for the rest of the day, so a revenge trade cannot blow the evaluation.

It never opens a trade. It only protects the account you already have.

A realistic setup

  • Set InpDailyLossPct = 5 and InpTotalLossPct = 10 to match a typical firm.
  • Leave Force Flatten and Hard Lock enabled (they are on by default in v0.2) so the guardian actually acts.
  • Fill InpInitialBalance with your evaluation starting balance — the thresholds are computed from it.
  • Add https://eabase.pro to MT4's WebRequest allow-list so the license check works.

The honest part

A guardian is a safety net, not a strategy. It will not make a losing system profitable. What it does is give you a second chance: it converts a single catastrophic session into a small, survivable loss — which is the entire difference between passing and starting over.

Risk disclaimer: Trading forex and CFDs with leverage can result in losses exceeding your deposit. PropGuard Sentinel is a risk-monitoring tool, not a guarantee against losses or account failure. Nothing here is financial advice. Test on a demo account before going live.
