Does a drawdown guardian actually save prop accounts? A practical look at PropGuard Sentinel
Most 'guardians' only alert. PropGuard Sentinel is built to act — force-flatten and lock at your danger line. Here is the honest test of whether that works.
The claim
A drawdown guardian promises to keep you from blowing a prop-firm account by force-closing and locking trades when you breach your own risk rules. Sounds great. The real question traders ask: does it actually work, or is it another dashboard that nags you while you lose?
Short answer: the intervention part works — if it is configured to actually intervene. Most "guardians" only alert. PropGuard Sentinel is built to act.
What it does (and does not do)
Does:
- Watches whole-account equity in real time, on any chart, independent of which EA(s) you trade.
- Tracks daily loss and max total drawdown against the exact percentages you set (FTMO-style 5% / 10% defaults included).
- Warns in tiers — notice at 50%, warning at 75%, danger at 90% — via popup, mobile push and email.
- At the danger line: force-flattens every position (market and pending) and soft-locks new trading until the next day's rollover.
Does not:
- Open trades. It is not a strategy and never enters the market.
- Make a losing system profitable. A guardian caps the damage; it does not create edge.
- Guarantee you pass. It converts a catastrophic session into a small, survivable loss.
The honest test
The only metric that matters: did it stop the account from failing when you would have kept going?
In practice the failure mode is rarely the software — it is the trader disabling it. "I'll just turn off the lock for one trade" is how people lose challenges. The design assumes you will not be rational after a loss, so it removes the choice at the danger line. That is the point.
Setup that actually protects you
InpDailyLossPct = 5,InpTotalLossPct = 10to match a typical firm.- Force Flatten and Hard Lock left on (default in v0.2). If you turn these off, you have a warning light, not a guardian.
InpInitialBalance= your evaluation start balance, so thresholds are computed correctly.https://eabase.proin MT4's WebRequest allow-list (required for the license check).
Who it is for
If you trade manually, run other EAs, or scale into funded accounts, an account-wide circuit breaker is the cheapest insurance you can buy — it is priced per month, not per account. If you already trade one tiny account with iron discipline and a hard stop, you may not need it. Most people overestimate their discipline at 2am.
